You've reached the voicemail of Donna Paulsen. I am currently unavailable, but if you leave your name and a brief description of what you need, I will get back to you just as soon as I can.
[ He does have the sense she prefers it that way, even if it's never been stated outright. And their rooms aren't that far apart, so it usually works out fine.
He puts his comm device in his pocket and lopes to her door. He doesn't know what she might say when she sees him. He doesn't know how widespread knowledge of the hijack attempt is, but she does know he works down there, and he's got some mottled bruising around his scar from being punched. In any case seeing her is a bright spot in his day and he smiles. ]
[She does indeed, and she does appreciate his thoughtfulness in that way, especially because he doesn't bring it up. Any implications that she can't handle herself would, after all, be met with disdain, but with this sort of tact, there are no problems.
She's got a vague idea of what happened, but she didn't connect any of the pieces until now.
Seeing the bruising makes her blink, but she uses years' worth of tact to not comment on it. Yet.]
Hello, hello. Shall we? Sounds like this is a needed break.
[ It's the unspoken things that make this nice. They seem to understand each other in that way. He smiles more broadly, as much as he can without stretching the skin where it hurts, and turns to head to the bar. ]
[No, no need at all. And good company doesn't pry, though she's certainly tucking all of this neatly into her mind for later analysis; you're not getting off so easily, York. Casual friends or not, she tends to take people under her wing--
So she simply nods, walking alongside him easily, heels clicking on the floor (space hell or not, she can be dressed nicely, can't she?).]
I can definitely provide that, then.
[...]
And maybe some ice at the bar as well.
[first acknowledgement of that bruising but it looks. pretty painful--]
[ He appreciates that about her, especially since this ship had seen fit to provide him only with one set of workout clothes. Unfortunately that means he ends up wearing his provided jumpsuit half the time, times such as right now, and the fact that that isn't seen as out of place is only a testament to the way everyone's point of view on just about everything is distorted by this place.
When she finally touches on the subject of his bruising, obliquely as she does, he shakes his head with a sheepish roll of the eyes. ]
Been icing it on and off all day. It's about as good as it's going to get at this point, I think.
Just avoid anyone you see wearing a mask, and you'll be fine.
[ And he actually does mean that. Those masks really fucked some people up. And he doesn't care to see her have an experience like he had with one of those people. ]
[ He doesn't recognize the references, but it doesn't really matter, he gets the gist. ]
I don't know what they are. I haven't seen anyone wearing one lately. [ he shrugs. ] Lots of things here make people act weird. I think people let that one get to their heads. Along with a lot of other things.
[ And yes, he has some fresh bruising to show for it. Some paranoid freaks decide they'd like the steal a shuttle and blindly try to get home, and he and his friends in the shuttle bay end up being the ones to pay for that.
He shakes his head, passing it off, as they reach the entrance to the bar. He gestures for her to lead the way in with a smile. ]
[ It isn't so much about numbing as it is ignoring. He just wants to enjoy things, and her presence is part of that.
He takes a seat when they get to the bar and lets himself fully relax into the situation, grinning. It hurts more to do so, but it was a lot more his usual way. ]
[Enjoying is good, she can do enjoying. Much better than worrying too much about serious things, even if she's definitely going to be remembering all of this.
But for now, drinks!]
I don't know about you, but I think I could go for a cocktail.
[VODKA MAYBE. who knows, she's mostly here to get him to chill out and calm down, since she's got nothing better to do and it's fun.]
[ He chuckled, starting to make his way around. He wasn't going to let something as minor as this get in the way of having a good time, especially now that he'd started to get used to ignoring it. ]
[ He's got a little bit of flair about mixing cocktails, and he sets about picking out a few bottles with a flourish. None of these tasted quite like their equivalents from home--actually, some of them were more reminiscent of mouthwash--but he'd done his experimenting in the times he'd taken a turn as bartender. ]
You know how it is with this space liquor. But I've worked up something that's not too bad; pretty close to a Long Island. Least, I think so.
[ He sets the glass in front of her when it's ready with a smile. ]
[ He had taken out a smaller glass for himself and poured out some of the space whiskey for himself. In response to her gesture he raises his glass in return and smiles. ]

There she is. Hey.

Breaks are nice. Good company is what's needed.
[ No need to clarify who he means by that. ]

So she simply nods, walking alongside him easily, heels clicking on the floor (space hell or not, she can be dressed nicely, can't she?).]

Ouch. Must've been pretty bad to start, then.
Well, what ice won't fix, perhaps some alcohol and good company will. I've got this under control.
no subject
His grin is still just a bit more restrained than usual when he turns it on in response to her words. ]
I like the sound of that. I did turn to an expert.
no subject
She just props her hands on her hips, tilting her head at him.]
Damn straight.
[More light-hearted is better; she was almost getting concerned.]
Well, regardless, nice creepy decor today, don't you think? So glad the ambience never changes.
no subject
[ but seriously, why are the hallways always so low-lit. ]
no subject
I might have to take to carrying around a flashlight. It ruins the ambience, but it's nice to be able to see where I'm going.
no subject
[ And he actually does mean that. Those masks really fucked some people up. And he doesn't care to see her have an experience like he had with one of those people. ]

...A mask?
I'm taking it you're not talking about creepy slenderman masks or something out of V for Vendetta.

I don't know what they are. I haven't seen anyone wearing one lately. [ he shrugs. ] Lots of things here make people act weird. I think people let that one get to their heads. Along with a lot of other things.

Now you can work some of your magic.
no subject
Just gonna smile in response and lead the way.]
Now that I can do. Let's get to work on numbing some of that pain.
no subject
He takes a seat when they get to the bar and lets himself fully relax into the situation, grinning. It hurts more to do so, but it was a lot more his usual way. ]
So what's the prescription, doc?

A cocktail sounds great. Are you doing the honors, or should I?
no subject
I don't suppose those bruises have crippled you terribly?
[come on, don't make the lady get the drinks.]
no subject
In the mood for anything in particular?
no subject
Mm, not particularly. Surprise me.
[She studies her nails absently. She's a l w a y s got opinions, but sometimes it's interesting to see what others think.]
no subject

Hope that hits the spot.
no subject
Not bad at all! You've got a knack for this, it seems.
[she smiles, lifting her glass in a toast.]
Cheers.
no subject
I like to think so.
no subject
That could suggest either a long history of alcoholism, or a tendency to play bartender--neither of which has to be mutually exclusive of the other.
I'm inclined to give you the benefit of the doubt, though.

Hey, the person who volunteers as bartender gets to hear all the best stories.
